If you are planning a commercial orchard operation, we would like to be your propagator of choice.  Please call us regarding custom or contract propagating arrangements.  Our technique of growing rootstocks and grafting them in pots is ideally suited for the establishment of large scale orchards.

It appears as though the prospective apple growers' biggest challenge is to establish a uniform stand of well grown trees. They are plagued by root stocks that freeze out and grafts that don't take. Unfortunately, the result is often rows of trees than range in age from 1 to 4 years. This difference in size complicates weed control, under planting, and irrigation tasks. I can imagine that this is when the enthusiasm for growing apples on the prairies sometimes wanes.

Our ideas for custom growing center around selling Ottawa #3 grafts that are well rooted into natural soil in one gallon pots. The plants would be ready for sale and planting in early spring…as soon as the sine bud is obviously growing. Depending on field conditions the grower should expect a uniform stand of 120 cm whips by fall. When we sell new grafts on a pre-order basis we can sell a 100 plant orchard for about $1800.00.

We have been propagating apple trees for more than 30 years. In 2001, we purchased an acreage in Martensville and now have the room and the capacity to produce many thousands of plants per year. In 2002, we grafted about 3400 fruit trees of which about 1100 went onto Ottawa #3 rootstock. Since then our production has more than doubled.  Our success rate is always between 90 and 100 per cent.

Our operation is unique in that we always graft onto containerized rootstock. Although the resulting plants are a little smaller they are much more uniform and reliable. Being locally grown, acclimatized, and well rooted, our plants can handle difficult field conditions. They can be shipped and planted anytime without refrigeration or specialized handling facilities.

At the LITTLE TREE NURSERY, we will do our best to provide the answers you need.

Best Regards,
