KELSEY FLOWERING CRAB     Malus x astringens 'Kelsey'

This small flowering tree is instantly recognisable in late May for its outstanding display of purplish red flowers.

Small tree: Height 4m (13ft).

Foliage: Young leaves are wine red changing to coppery green as they mature.

Flowers: A profuse display of wine red flowers is produced in late May and early June. The flowers can be two inches across.

Fruit: "Strictly for the birds."

Comments: Beautiful specimens of this tree can be found in the older parts of the city. In recent years it is regaining some of its former popularity. The Kelsey Flowering Crab is cloned by grafting. Like all apples, it is somewhat susceptible to fire blight.
